The Truth about Cervical Cancer: Protect yourself from this Killer Disease
Cervical cancer is cancer of the cervix. It is caused by a common virus known as HPV, or the Human Papilloma Virus.
It is also caused by the abnormal growth and division of cells that make up the cervix, which is the narrow, lower end of the uterus (womb). Cervical cancer is most often diagnosed in middle-aged women between the ages of 35 and 55, really a major health issue for women worldwide.
HPVs (Human Papilloma Virus)
HPV infections are very common. It infects the skin and mucous membranes of humans. They are group of viruses that can infect the cervix. They are called papillomaviruses because some types cause warts, or papillomas, which are benign tumors.
It can be passed from person to person through sexual contact. Other types of HPV can cause changes to cells in the cervix. These changes can lead to genital warts, cancer, and other problems.
Cervical Cancer Symptoms
- Unusual heavy discharge – It may be foul smelling, watery, thick, or contain mucus.
- Pelvic pain – that is not related to the normal menstrual cycle can be a cervical cancer symptom.
- Abnormal Vaginal bleeding
- Pain during urination
Cervical cancer is easily prevented with early screening and treatment. Have a regular pap smear in women to detect cell changes that could become cancer.
Have a HPVs vaccine, this vaccine is given to girls as young as 9 years old because it most effective when given to young women before being sexually active.
