Ubuntu for Human Beings
Ubuntu philosophy: “I am what I am because of who we all are”, a positive aspect of community.
Ubuntu is a community developed Linux-based operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. Ubuntu was founded by Mark Shuttleworth, the founder of Thawte, and the first African to travel in space; an ancient African word meaning “humanity to others”. It is based on Debian GNU/Linux, and also serves as the foundation for several other Linux distributions in its own right.
Ubuntu includes the very best translations and accessibility infrastructure that the free software community has to offer. It is composed of free and open source software distributed under various licenses, especially the GNU General Public License (GPL) which means that users are free to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. Ubuntu, a user-friendly version of Linux.
It comes with OpenOffice.org 2.0, an excellent personal productivity suite that works much like of MS Office, with its own word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation programs. It reads and writes files in MS Word, RTF so sharing your files who uses Windows or Mac Desktops won’t be a problem.
Ubuntu can also detect a blank CD when a disk is inserted and ask if you would like to burn a data or an audio CD like windows platform. If you choose data, it will open a new window where you can drag and drop files. Burning a data CD is so simple in this manner. Just a small problem, the program, Nautilus, doesn’t tell you how much disc space you’re using so you better do the calculation.
Overall, Ubuntu is one of the best alternative for MAC and WINDOWS platforms. After all, it is created with the slogan “Linux for human beings”.
